Yup, rear lights (with backup lights!) visible and functional only when the trunk is open.

But why?

That’s because it is a Opel and I think Europe mandates it. Just like why Suabrus have a little cut out filled in or the BRZ has a reflector where the rear fog lamps should be.

Wouldn’t say that’s really borrowed from Aston Martin.

Ye’, also on the Vauxhall/Opel Insignia Estate.

Not to my knowledge, I’ve only seems them on the insignia/regal/cascada.

Its so if you need to drive with the hatch open. Only necessary if the lights are only located on the hatch or trunk. not necessary when they are attached to the rear fender. IE the Cross Trek

Opel also did it on the Insignia.
It basically happens when you have no lights visible when the trunk is open on European cars.

You can’t have tail lights on a movable piece of the car, which is why the California has them at the bottom. If you have the trunk open carrying a piece of furniture or something, you can still have taillights.

I think both the US and Europe mandate the brake lights to be visible when the trunk lid is open, I see CaptDale mentioned that Europe required it, but didn’t mention what.

You can also buy a Ford with a feature borrowed from Aston Martin.

It’s a legal requirement in the EU to have certain lights visible at all times so if they’re blocked when you’ve got the boot lid or hatch open extra ones have to be fitted. It’s not common though. If there’s a spare wheel in the way which will block lights you have to move them to the bumper, like this.
In each case it’s to avoid a scenario when someone has to (for example) stop by the road at night and change a wheel. You want your car visible to traffic.

You can now by a Ford with the outside of an Aston Martin borrowed from Aston Martin.

It’s been (more successfully) done since...

but why tho? what are the odds that anyone will drive with the rear hatch open.

How do the Q5 and Q7 get around it though?
I don’t recall ever seeing the bumper lights lit but perhaps they just disable them for us stupid Americans.

im not sure it’s necessary, just look at the audi q7s, which have rear lamps on the rear hatch, but have nothing underneath it. although ive always wondered how people would see the lights when anyone is driving a q7 with the hatch open. maybe its that little strip of lights on the bumper.

Perhaps, I’ve only ever seen an A1 with the boot lights on like twice ever and there are like 10 or 20x more A1s than Qs.
I’ve seen Qs with the normal lights disabled and only working with the bumper lights, so maybe their boot was not properly closed and thats why?
The solution is definetly the bumper lights for the Qs, they went against it for the A1 so it wouldn’t look SUV-ish and they can then make a Q1 and sell that at a premium

Possibly? I don’t think its common across all manufacturers.

Weird, then I don’t know why.
